Recent studies have found that the consumption of even one soda per day increases your risk of new-onset metabolic syndrome by as much as 45%! Researchers expected to find negative results from conventional sodas, but were surprised to also find those results in diet sodas. The 2007 study known as the Framingham Heart Study, published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, also found the following outcomes from the consumption of just one can of soda per day:
31% greater risk of becoming obese
30% increased risk of adding on belly fat
25% higher risk of developing high blood triglycerides
32% higher risk of having low HDL levels
The study included nearly 9,000 observations of middle aged men and women over a four year time period. It seems to indicate that the negative health impact of sodas occurs equally in both regular sodas and diet sodas. One of the key ingredients that has such a negative and toxic effect on the body is caramel which is used to colour sodas. More recent studies on diet sodas have drawn a connection strokes and dementia. A recently published article in the journal Stroke, found that those individuals who consumed 1-6 cans of soda per week had twice the incidence of strokes and an increased risk for developing dementia. Though the study did not indicate direct causality, it nonetheless raises significant questions about just how benign those off the shelf sodas – including diet sodas really are. In the words of Christopher Gardner, director of Nutrition Studies at the Stanford Prevention Research Center, “So, the bottom line is, ‘Have more water and have less diet soda”. Positive health effects have been found with teas and coffees, but there is no evidence that there is any health benefits to sodas, whether they are diet sodas or not. Water, may be just what the doctor ordered.
